Submit
your website to the search engines
It is best to submit your site to the search
engines by hand rather than using a submission service. Be sure to
read the "Terms" for each one and submit your site. This will help
you get the hits that your site needs for free. In about a month,
you will start to see the traffic build. The thing to remember is
that you must have suitable URL content and be engineered to beat
your competition within the search engines before you register your
pages. Just registering with the search engines does not
assure a suitable ranking.

Do
not submit mirror sites
- Do not
submit URLs that contain only the same or similar content as other
sites you may have listed in the directory
- Multiple
submissions of the same or related sites may result in the
exclusion and/or deletion of those and all affiliated sites
-
Do not submit
any site with an address that redirects to another
address
-
The Open
Directory has a policy against the inclusion of sites with illegal
content
-
Do not submit
sites "under construction, contain broken graphics or
links
-
Don't submit
sites consisting largely of affiliate links
-
Be sure
your site isn't already listed on dmoz.org
-
Submit a site to
the single most relevant category. Sites submitted to
inappropriate or unrelated categories may be rejected or removed.
Go directly to that category on dmoz.org and then click "add
URL." Follow the instructions on the submission form
carefully. Descriptions of sites should describe the content
of the site concisely and accurately. They should not be
promotional in nature. Submitting a promotional description rather
than an objective, well written description may significantly
delay your site from being listed or prevent your site from being
listed at all
-
Because this is
volunteer-based editing and inclusion it can take up to 8 weeks
(of late, almost ALWAYS 6 or more months) to get listed in The
Open Directory. Once there, it may take additional time for the
listing to be used by sites using ODP data. You may be rejected by
the category editor without explanation, or simply ignored, but a
common cause is that you may not offer unique content to the
topic. The thing to remember is that you must have suitable URL
content and be engineered to beat your competition within The Open
Directory before you register your pages. Just registering with
The Open Directory does not assure a suitable

comments or keywords that describe the content of your page. These

Only the
top-level page from a host is necessary; you do not need to submit
each individual page. Our crawler, Googlebot, will be able to find

Google updates
its index on a regular basis, so updated or outdated link
submissions are not necessary. Dead links will 'fade out' of our
index on our next crawl when we update our entire
index

Basically,
Google's position is that we prefer no hidden links, no hidden
text, no automatic tools used for positioning, and no cloaking. We
prefer that Googlebot get the exact same page that users see. In
general, you can assume that we're as conservative as possible. We
don't like hidden links/text in divs/layers/iframes/css, or links
that are inconspicuous or punctuation, for example. Similarly, we
don't like cloaking or sneaky redirects in any form, whether it be
user agent/ip-based, or redirects through javascript, meta
refreshes, 301/302's, or 100% frames." More details are available

the LookSmart Network, offering free listings to noncommercial and
not-for-profit Web sites. If this is you, go here http://zeal.com/
- LookSmart is different from
other paid advertising services by selling paid listings to
commercial sites with no guarantee of success. The small business
program, LookListings Small Business, lets you get one URL per web
site listed with LookSmart. You pay a one-time $49 review fee,
like a credit review process determining whether you will be
accepted or rejected (5 day period). When accepted, you are
changed $0.15 for each click that you receive from your LookSmart
listing at any Looksmart or partner site that carries its
listings. There is an additional $15 per month minimum billing
charge equal to 100 clicks
- Before submitting your site to
Looksmart, you should first scan the Looksmart directory to find
the most appropriate category. Second, you should make sure your
title and description does not exceed 35 and 145 characters
respectively. After this, you can then proceed to fill out the
form and submit your site. Looksmart will contact you by email

Lycos -
Search -
Submit
- Lycos receives
their web results from a variety of sources. The results from the
"Popular" section of Lycos comes primarily from the Lycos web
editors. In the "Web Sites" section, results come from the Open
Directory, Fast Search (All the Web), and the Lycos web crawler.
The Open Directory powers the category links at the top of the
"Web Sites" section, and also provides some web site matches.
Below the category links are web site links, which come primarily
from Fast Search. Secondary links are provided by the Lycos web
crawler
- Although it is not as significant in the results
rankings as it used to be, the Lycos web crawler is still
spidering the web. The Lycos web crawler does not weigh META tags
heavily. Indexing is based on an algorithm that takes a look at
components of the URL name, Meta title, text body headings and
subheadings, how frequently words appear, where these words appear
in relationship to one another, as well as a document abstract
(based on full body text). Any web page that does not have a
minimum of 75 words is not indexed but Frames are supported. Lycos
does not care about case sensitivity. They will not allow special
characters in text, so avoid ?, =, and $. Pages are added in 3 to
6 weeks
MSN -

- The top search
results are generally in Looksmart sequence. Since Looksmart is a
PPC (pay-per-click) directory, if your account balance falls to $0
your ranking in this section of MSN will vanish. This means that
the rankings in MSN are not stable on a day-to-day basis and that
you should consider paying into the Looksmart program
- Your site must be in English

pornographic or adult advertising, gratuitous or graphic violence,
material that infringes on or violates someone's rights, or
material that promotes/disseminates illegal activities

Altavista - Search -
Submit
- AltaVista is a
search engine that uses many sources to produce its results. These
sources include the Open Directory, Real Names, and its own
web-crawling spider. After submitting a search phase to AltaVista,
the user, by default, is given AltaVista's web page matches, which
are produced by AltaVista's web page index
- AltaVista no longer spiders full sites using
links between pages. You must submit the specific page you want
indexed or it will not be located and indexed
- Results are presented in the following sequence:
1) featured (doubleclick ad), 2) Overture (2 entries), and 3) its
own index
- URLs will be considered for inclusion into the
AltaVista search results in 4-6 weeks
- URLs that return a 404 error will be removed from
the search results
- Submission of your URL does not guarantee
inclusion into the AltaVista search results
- Once you correctly submit your first URL, you
will be able to submit up to 4 more URLs
-
In order to maintain the integrity of the search
index, we must sometimes exclude submissions that manipulate
search results. Examples of such manipulation include, but are not
limited to, the following:
- Pages with text that is not easily read, either
because it is too small or is obscured by the background of the
page
- Pages with off-topic or excessive keywords
- Pages that duplicate content, either by
excessive submission of the same page, submitting the same pages
from multiple domains, or submitting the same content from
multiple hosts
- Pages that are machine-generated with minimal
or no content, whose sole purpose is to get a user to click to
another page
- Pages that contain only links to other pages
- Pages of which the primary intent is to
redirect users to another page
- Pages that violate a court order or otherwise
are required to be removed by a court or governmental regulatory
body
- Attempts to fill AltaVista's index with
misleading or promotional pages lower the value of the index for
everyone. We do not allow URL submissions from customers who spam
the index and will exclude all such pages from the
index
